What is “Man-Up” men mentorship?
One would agree that society has over the years put up interventions for the girl child owing to the unequal balance that has existed over the years. These kinds of interventions have followed the girl child into womanhood. Sadly, the male child has been left to figure things out for himself, this self-discovery journey has been injurious to many a man and many families as the trial & error system kicked in. Issues of suicidal thought, life threatening addictions, careless approach to life have followed our males and sadly for that matter.
Many males would not point to their fathers as being influential in their character moulding, they would almost unanimously point to their mothers, also sad is the fact that mothers were never meant to be men and therefore could only do their best according to how they viewed things. The fathers to the males also had failed upbringing which they passed on to the male children. As a corporate entity that employs more males than females in decision making positions, it is in your best interest to be part of the correction of the male mental attitude which in turn can and will affect the company’s bottom line. You will have sound decision makersza
It is our vision to see better raised males providing better leadership thereby guaranteeing sustainability of success because they will open to new ideas, will own the success of families and boy children, they will collaborate more and provide safety to the families and communities they grow in.
“Man-Up” is a naming protocol arrived at to deal with the male stereotype that positions men as brute, emotionless, non-sensitive and uncaring beings. The harsh reality is that most men are broken individuals that need mentoring in manhood, individuals that need an emotional vent to balance their thoughts and decisions. Men have not received a purposeful raising process from childhood. All they have been told is that men don’t cry, men have to be tough, men make decisions yet they have not been taught how to deal with the emotions, hardships and challenges life throws at all human beings. This has left men not being able to manage their women counterparts that seem to have an upper hand in life in the current world.
This has also led to men not being able to channel their anger issues emanating from being able to do better as other men, other women and them not being able to cope with stress at various levels rendering them absentee fathers as facing the challenges head on was never taught to them. Seeing as men still form the majority of leadership in the corporate world, this opportunity for men to mentor men presents itself.
Introspect, a consultancy division of Design Innovations Group Zambia (a wholly owned Zambian company) presents Man Up as an intervention to this serious and deep-rooted problem. The series started with a “step-up” theme in 2018 inviting men to step up to the challenge and be purposeful males that will take their place in the humanity sphere. Under this theme men and boys went through life saving mentorship and motivation that started the positioning as purposeful role models for other males and women.
